HIA Co-Founder & COO Chip Fritsch separates the AI hype from what’s already working in hotel accounting today and the next wave of AI assistance in finance. Plus, questions you can ask your vendor to understand their AI roadmap for yourself.
As featured in Hospitality Net, the #1 ranked website for the global hospitality community, Fritsch breaks down where AI in hotel accounting is actually delivering value today and how to evaluate the claims you’ll hear from vendors along the way.
“Instead of just helping you process transitions, the AI tools of tomorrow are going to open up new ways for you to interact with your data.”
— Chip Fritsch, COO & Co-Founder, HIA · Hospitality Net
The AI tools already automating data entry, reconciling data, and streamlining workflows should be considered table stakes for modern hospitality accounting firms. These include end-to-end accounts payable, smart bank reconciliation, automated PMS data pulls, and approval workflows.
The next wave of AI capabilities will move beyond automating repetitive work and incorporate natural language capabilities to interact with your data. In-system AI assistants will allow you to ask your ERP in the same language you might google a question, such as, “Which departmental expenses have increased the most year-to-date?”. Operators will have the information they need at their fingertips without being a data engineer or finance expertise. In-system AI customer support agents will help quickly unravel a snarl or uncover the source of a discrepancy.
And finally, Fritsch covers where AI in hospitality finance is heading. Model Context Protocol (MCP) capabilities are already on the roadmap for modern hospitality ERP software. Over time, this type of connectivity could make it easier for finance leaders to benchmark labor, expenses, and margins across an entire portfolio while tying those numbers back to operational drivers like occupancy, ADR, or segment mix.
Fritsch concludes with a reminder that AI lacks is judgement, and at the end of the day, someone still has to stand behind the financials.
